Police explain the circumstances that led to Griffin’s death in early December

A Polk County man was honored over the weekend by family and friends in a memorial service after he died in a tragic shooting incident. No one could have predicted what happened on a fateful Sunday afternoon in early December that hasn’t just brought pain to one family, but many.

On the afternoon of December 4 – less than 24 hours after he had watched Dalton Dover at the Grand Ol’ Opry in Nashville – Adam Griffin’s life would be cut short.

Griffin was honored by more than 150 fellow bikers in a procession around the county following services on Sunday afternoon.

Now Polk County Police have provided further details on how his life came to a sad end.

Griffin, 42, died not long after Emergency Medical personnel from AdventHealth Redmond EMS arrived on the scene at 2711 Esom Hill Road.

The first officers on the scene arrived after they received a 911 call from the residence to report shots were fired and found a confused and unexpected shooting took place. Griffin was transported by EMS as soon as they arrived, but his injuries at the time were too severe for him to survive, and he passed away before a LifeFlight helicopter could arrive and carry him off to a hospital in Atlanta.

The man who fired the shots during this time had returned home, secured his weapon, went to the end of his driveway, and ultimately turned himself in to Polk County Police.

In a release provided to Polk Today, investigators noted that Wesley Garmon cooperated fully in the investigation that was now underway. He turned over physical evidence including his gun and clothing and spoke with detectives several times throughout the course of the following weeks.

The same was reported by Polk County Police in regard to a witness to the entire set of events that ended with shots being fired. Crick Fincher additionally provided full cooperation with police, and his and Garmon’s stories both lined up.

According to the accounts, Polk County Police were able to determine a timeline of the events leading up to the shooting, which began with a trespassing incident that occurred earlier in the day on December 4.

Detectives explained that a pair of Griffin’s family members were caught trespassing on hunting club property of which Garmon is a member earlier in the day, and he confronted the pair confronted them at gunpoint and called 911. The pair fled from the property before police arrived and weren’t identified until later when they confirmed the incident occurred.

Griffin became aware of the incident, and then called his friend Crick Fincher upset because of what happened, and was looking for Garmon.

“When Crick arrived home, he observed Adam Griffin standing in front of his house holding a shotgun in one hand and a beer can in the other,” the release stated. “By this time, Adam had identified the male he was looking for as Wesley Garmon.”

The pair could hear Garmon cutting wood outside of his residence, and an angered Griffin wanted to confront Garmon on his property. Fincher told police at this point, he had never seen Griffin so angry and “had never seen Adam that way.”

Fincher told police that Griffin began walking through the woods toward the back of Garmon’s house from his home on Esom Hill Road, and a trail camera picked up the pair around 3:58 p.m. The photo police referenced showed Griffin carrying a shotgun and leading the way toward the back of the Garmon household.

“Crick stated that he convinced Adam to turn back and return to 2711 Esom Hill Road,” the release stated. “Crick tells Adam he will call Wesley and have him come speak to them on neutral ground.”

Griffin agreed and promised to only speak with Garmon about the trespassing incident that happened earlier “and that he would not involve the shotgun.”

Fincher told investigators he then got Garmon’s number and made a call. Garmon confirmed that he got the call to come over to talk about the incident.

He walked through the woods, and was seen by the same trail camera as he headed toward Fincher’s residence at 2711 Esom Hill Road around 4:05 p.m.

Less than a minute later, Fincher and Garmon are reported to be shaking hands on Fincher’s* front porch. This is when Griffin stormed out of the front door with the shotgun he promised to leave inside.

Fincher told police that Garmon’s eyes grew large and the “look on his face changed” as the barrel of the shotgun came over Fincher’s shoulder, pointed directly at Garmon. Griffin began to scream at Garmon, who pulled out his handgun and a struggle ensued.

Griffin at some point during this struggle got the upper hand and placed Garmon a chokehold from behind.

Garmon reported to police that it was at this point he fired “multiple shots from his handgun in self-defense” until Griffin released him.

“Once Wesley got back to his feet, he ran away back toward his house with a cell phone in his left hand and blood on his right hand,” the report stated. The same trail camera picked up this photo of Garmon fleeing just two minutes after he went by with the expectations of talking out the issue with his neighbor.

During this time, Garmon calls 911 for the second time that day to report he had been attacked and shot Griffin and fled the scene in fear for his safety, and ultimately turned himself into the police.

Polk County Police have ruled the incident to be self-defense and have no plans to continue any further investigation at this time or charge Garmon with any wrongdoing.

Polk County Police hoped that a full release explaining the events that occurred on December 4 which ended with the death of Griffin, will bring some closure to a community that is still struggling to understand what happened and lead to a greater understanding throughout the county shocked by what occurred.

What happened before this tragic killing?
It couldn’t have been that people were just stopped for trespassing !!
There had to be something more serious happen !!

Someone needs to read statute codes because if he pulled a gun on people earlier in the day; that could be considered assault.

So nothing was done about Garmon pulling a gun on his 2 family members though. And obviously Garmon is known to be hot headed with a gun because this obviously wasn’t the first time Garmon has pulled a gun on someone. Guess that’s okay though.

Polk County PD has failed this family. Adam always backed the blue & y’all have let him down. Surely y’all tried to release this the nicest way possible because the whole community is pissed. How many times does Garmon get to keep pulling guns on children and y’all do nothing. Y’all basically just gave this man another reason to keep pulling his gun! No charges at all?? I’m not law enforcement at all but I can tell you y’all’s little story isn’t sitting right with this community. We will get JUSTICE!

the report said nothing about garmon pointing his pistol point blank into a 15 year old girls face. She was one of the two of Adam’s family members in the first incident where shots were fired by garmon. FOR TRESSPASSING??!!! Also it said nothing about garmon chasing them in his truck. So it’s ok to point a pistol into a 15 yr girls face & then chase her on her dirt bike in his truck.

So Adam never shot at the guy or even fired his gun at all? He had the guy in a choke hold and the guy “feared for his life” and that’s reason enough to take another’s life???! That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard! What has the world come to when we are letting people kill others and go home? Adam doesn’t get to go home! Why the he’ll does this guy?!!?

Vanessa – in the article it says Mr. Griffin pointed the shotgun at Mr. Garmon. That would be enough to make me fear for my life.

David I guess yeah it would me as well. However, I myself wouldn’t have confronted a kid or kids with a gun for trespassing. I know if it was my kid that called me saying someone had approached them with a gun I’d be pissed too. I’d want to beat his butt too. Should Adam of had a gun…. well this guy had one and pointed it at a 15year old…. how do I know he won’t do the same to me. And maybe all Adam was doing with the gun was showing the other guy what it was like to have a gun in his face. I don’t believe Adam had any intention on shooting the guy. If he did then when he came out the door and put it in his face he would have pulled the trigger right then. He wouldn’t have gave the other guy a chance to pull his out of to “struggle” with anything. That’s just my opinion though. Either way a man lost his life and the one that took it gets away with it. Seems no punishment at all. He should be charged. I wonder if he’s a member of this good Ole boy bs we seem to have going on around here….

Total bullshit. Those 2 got their stories straight so they could make Adam out to be the bad guy. Those 2 knew exactly what they were doing and lied thru their teeth about the whole thing because Adam isn’t here to defend himself.

So sad for the loss of Adam. Polk County has their own laws. I would love to read what the Polk County Laws are because they are wrong. I hope and pray that Adam’s family can have some closure due to his tragic death. And I am ashamed to say that I live in a corrupt county like Polk.

It makes one stop and wonder…why would a man which did not own the land that he was “policing” stop people at gunpoint? This isn’t the first time he’s done this!
The land is leased by the hunting club that he is a member of! Why so protective of the place? People riding by on 4 wheelers being stopped at gunpoint?! Something fishy with that!
Also, the fact that this part of the story is NOT included in the story! Something isn’t adding up!!

Why were there no charges for Garmon pointing a gun, and chasing Adam’s family members? He is known for doing this to others as well. The proprietary is not even his! It is being leased to a hunting club he is a member of! Polk Co. needs, and deserves answers to this question!

While I have no ties to anyone in this story and don’t live anywhere near this area.I came across this and feel some things are being taken out of context. First someone lost their live which was completely prevent able. Second people and yes kids should be thought to respect others property whether leases private state owned or anything else. Just because it is leased land doesn’t give you the right to tress pass and do as you so choose. This is a big problem in our society. It’s called a lack or respect, morals and common decency. I don’t feel pointing a gun at anyone over trespassing is the right way to handle things, however it’s not illegal. Someone coming on to my land with a shotgun with another person sends a provocative message you aren’t coming to be friendly. It seems as this garmon person intended to resolve this peacefully by going to talk to these folks. This Adam fella was so enraged with anger he chose to threaten a man’s life with a shotgun to his face. I would have used every means necessary to protect myself. You don’t wait around for another person to shoot you before you decided to shoot them your dead. This is a tragic situation and there are no winners here. The emotional toll it is gonna take on this man for taking the life of another will forever mentally change him. In essence he has a life sentence to live with this in his mind. I realize this fella was loved and cared for by many and he his now gone so sad.. I would be devastated as many of you are. I try my best to stay off peoples land I don’t know who they are and don’t have permission to be there. If I need to be on someone’s place I find out who owns it and ask them.. if I can’t do that I leave a note on the property asking to be contacted. If people need places to ride atvs on find somewhere legally allowed to do so. I leased land in this area many years ago. It wa terrible with trespassing and thieves. Had stuff stolen burnt to the ground etc… there needs to be a major crackdown in this area of criminal activity. It’s starts with you people standing up in the area and having enough of all the criminal activity that is going on and obeying the laws. You cannot solve this problem without being united together and having enough. Finding dead body’s in tool boxes left on the side of the road is scary. I would not want to have a home and live in this are myself. I hope you all find peace and healing through this tragic situations merry Christmas and happy holidays.. I wish you all well

My heart goes out to the family of the man killed. It will be a sad Christmas this year.

Having said that, this explanation is terribly written, and I found myself having to read and re-read it. It seems there were some things left out (or at least left incomplete) making it difficult to put ×all× the pieces together. A bit more specificity would go a long way.
