Vibe Coding with AI to extend WordPress Multisite functionality

|

|

WordPress without a doubt is a highly functional tool for content creation and site hosting, able to do a large number of things out of the box. Site creators with additional plugins, code snippets and customized code can extend that even further, with the only barrier to entry being the premium plugin market’s crazy cost structure (in some cases) or the lack of knowledge with working with code.

No one begrudges developers for wanting to make the maximum value for their work, but sometimes the small businesses out there can’t afford $599 a year for a single thing that accomplishes one particular need.

A democratizing tool now available everywhere is the proliferation of AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini (as some examples) that are able without any additional cost and with correct structure to follow from a short amount of time using Google to research and some logic on a user’s part to generate simple code. Good enough code that will do what most users who are setting up their own websites weren’t able to do in the past without spending hours online attempting to research or learn to code custom solutions of their own. The only other option before was to pay a lot of money for annual license subscriptions to get systems to work together.

During the process of recreating the Myrick Multimedia site infrastructure over the past several months, it turns out that AI coding (dubbed vibe coding in recent times) was put to good use in taking elements from various plugins and the core WordPress features and allow them to be used in a Multisite network context somewhat specific for this news and sports network’s current and future needs.

For instance: there are several RSS feed plugins that provide “ease of use” for site owners to display content from one site to another. Sure they work just fine for some, but usually those plugins also require premium features to get the most out of the system (anecdotally based purely on personal experience and searching.) Other systems like Geodirectory create a wonderful single site directory, and will even host without additional premium upgrades the ability to have two directory types on a site.

But it wasn’t really built with the concept in mind that a Multisite network might want to share those items across several WordPress instances. Neither are RSS plugins, which in this context are mainly designed to duplicate content between site owners, so each has a version for their own site of what they are looking to achieve with a specific piece of content.

The idea for the specific Myrick Multimedia use case was to ensure that duplicated content isn’t being shared anywhere on the network, or having to use up a lot of servers resources by having to run multiple instances of the same plugin. The logic being sound in theory, and hopefully now fulfilled in practice that duplicated efforts across multiple sites ultimately is wasteful. Note these solutions might have already existed, but not in any particular way that was immediately found that worked as easily as these when all was said and done.

Why reinvent the wheel and have multiple directory listings when a consolidated effort on the main site displayed across the network is an easier fix, and allows for content sharing of things like events and classifieds across a wider reader area. Plus, this way of doing things keeps the resources behind a specific paywall area for subscribers to be able to add that content, ensuring that their efforts aren’t requiring duplication as well. Who wants to create 3 different car ads or 6 different event listings when it is easier for the overall user experience to just make one and point things internally where they need to go on the network.

Site admins and creators using a similar setup will thus appreciate this internal sharing snippet dubbed Network Posts for regular WordPress post content sharing, which uses the shortcode architecture to display items from another site in the network, with various taxonomy filters and options for how those items are displayed.

Additionally for fellow Geodirectory users, the AI coding sessions provided the necessary framework to share events and listings from a source site on others across the network, with a simple plugin that will register the geodirectory post types on the network site.

Future plans include putting AI through additional rounds of iteration on these specific snippets as new thoughts about features come to mind, or bugs are found that need to be repaired. Anyone who wishes to share any customizations they’ve added to these generic versions AI wrote for public consumption are also welcome.

Feel free to email any code variations, bug reports or potential questions to info@myrickmultimedia.com. Those will be shared with the permission of those making iterations here for the public to use as well.

Note that email responses may not be immediate, but they will at least be returned at some point. Since these projects are being made freely available, no support is actually being offered for users for this code specifically.

ChatGPT specifically wrote the Geodirectory-related code for the mu-plugin and the snippets, so anyone who has questions specific to those might want to copy-paste the code into it for further help in modifying for particular needs.

Check back in the near future for additional vibe coded WordPress Multisite related content in the near future. Next project will be sports related, and delve into the fun world of Advanced Custom Fields and CPT UI.
