SOFTBALL: Rockmart heading to Sandy Creek for the second round of the state playoffs

The Rockmart Lady Yellow Jackets move to the second round of the Class AAA playoffs in softball after taking wins over Lumpkin County in the first round.

A 12-2 Game 1, and an 8-5 Game 2 rounded out the first round road trip for the Lady Jackets, who will be back on the road starting Friday at Sandy Creek to play the Lady Patriots. An if-necessary Game 3 would be played on Saturday if the Lady Jackets can’t close out the Lady Patriots in two games on the road.

The Lady Jackets won a decisive Game 1 over the Lady Indians in a six-inning outing and battled in the second to close out the series for the second-seed Lumpkin County squad in the road trip to open the playoffs.

Rockmart took Game 2 against the Lady Indians after scoring a pair of runs in the first and second innings, putting up three runs in the third and capping off the top of the fifth with three more runs to close out the game with 12 hits and an error. Though Lumpkin scored in the bottom of the first and added three runs to match the Lady Jackets in the third, their chance at a comeback only went a run into the sixth inning and was cut short without any offensive support in the seventh.

Rockmart finished third in region play on the year in the regular season, going 20-7 overall and finishing out 6-AAA play at 12-4. The two wins moved their record to 22-7 on the year.

The 17-11 Lady Patriots went first in their region at 10-2 and went three games against Stephens County in the first round of the playoffs.
