SOFTBALL: Lady Jackets playing for title shot in Columbus

The Elite Eight round of the Class AA Softball State Playoffs begins in Columbus on Wednesday, and the Rockmart Lady Jackets are set for trying to get back into the big one and bring home a state title.

Rockmart opens their Elite Eight round against Morgan County on Wednesday, October 30 at 1 p.m. in Columbus’ softball complex, where the Elite Eight round moves annually for all classifications heading into state title games next weekend.

The Lady Jackets come into the contest after running through Crisp County and South Atlanta in the opening two rounds in homestands in the Class AA playoffs. This is Rockmart’s latest trip to Columbus since their 2017 title win. The Lady Jackets have made it to the playoffs every year since and been in contention toward a run three times in the past seven years.

Rockmart faces a Morgan County team to open the Elite Eight round who beat Salem and LFO to advance to Columbus. They come into this one with a perfect record in their region at 15-0 to finish their year, and a 24-5 record. They split in the second round of the playoffs with LFO, who forced a Game 3 as the Lady Bulldogs took the victory to advance over the Lady Warriors.

The 23-6 Lady Jackets have been on a winning spree since they took a pair of losses earlier this month before season’s end. They’ve picked up the last five to go into the Columbus round of play with a hot hand, and took the last eight of ten before they finished second in region play earlier in the month.

They went 2-0 against Crisp County in the opening round of the playoffs, then swept South Atlanta to advance.
