RECREATION: Cedartown Spring Sports signups underway until Jan. 31

Baseball comes under Cedartown Recreation control, Girls Softball and Soccer all set to start on March 19

The Cedartown Recreation Department will be giving youth the chance to play Little League Baseball, along with softball and soccer this spring as they take over for the Cedartown Youth Baseball organization for their first season of play within the city’s department instead of a separate organization.

“They’ve done a great job this year keeping baseball going here in Cedartown. They voted this past year, the board did to turn everything back over to the city, and so the city will be taking the reigns of baseball,” Hulsey said. “The only difference you’re going to see between us being in charge of it and the baseball board itself is we’re going back to Little League. Little League is what we played as kids, what our crosstown rival Rockmart – they play Little League. We thought it would be a lot better when we play interleague games coming over here you go by one set of rules, over there another set of rules. Now we’re all the same.”

CYB turned over control of the youth league back to the city for this year, which means that new teams will be forming and volunteers will be needed to help.

Recreation Director Jeff Hulsey reported that 200 youth signed up this year for recreation basketball within the city, requiring the help and support of local schools to open up their gyms in the evening for teams to practice. The league this year added 8 teams compared to their 2020-21 numbers for play.

Hulsey is expecting a large turnout this year for soccer, softball and baseball as spring brings people and youth back outdoors.

For those who want to play this year, parents can pay $60 per youth for either baseball, softball or soccer. Age ranges start at 5 and go up to 13 for baseball.

“Opening Day parade is March 19,” Hulsey said. “We’ll have it here at Bert Wood Park, along with the opening ceremonies that day.”

Volunteers are being requested for coaching any sport, but it will require a background check on any participants without cost.

“We need coaches, we always need referees or umpires. Anything you would like to do in recreation sports, we’d love to have you.”
