I’m all about throwing out the old and getting with the new here at Polk.Today this morning – well, maybe not so much throwing anything out. Just the new.
I’m excited to announce two new things today, a product and an advertiser. So let’s get right to it:
New advertiser
This week marks another new signup with Polk.Today on the advertising front, and I’d like to thank The Clever Canvas Art Studio for joining on. I very much (well, I’m sure Kayla does too) hope that you will click on the ad and check out the art studio’s Facebook page for more information.
Time is running out for those interested in signing up for advertising under introductory rates. Increases will begin on August 1, so act now by emailing me at kevin@polk.today to learn more.
New Podcast
Ah yes, for those who didn’t click on the front page and notice a new box lives underneath police news, there’s now a podcast available! I hope to make this at least a regular feature (can one hope for daily?) and I’m happy to take suggestions, comments, constructive criticism and more at kevin@polk.today.
Make sure to click here to give the first episode with Ferst Readers Debbie Ross a listen.
That’s really all there is new about the site today. More tomorrow.
In the News
Don’t forget this weekend is the Youth Summerfest, drive-thru edition. I’ll be out there at some point taking pictures (still with my phone…) and talking to folks, so if you can’t afford school supplies for the start of the year, make sure to utilize this opportunity. I’m sure if you call Courtney Ripoll, she’ll probably still be interested in donations as well.

Among other news items found online yesterday and shared to the Polk.Today Facebook page was this: The City of Cedartown is looking for a new recreation director to take over the program just ahead of the potential comeback of fall sports.
Those interested can check out more info at cedartowngeorgia.gov/jobs/. Hopefully someone will come into that role and tackle it full on.
Also in the news is a name that hasn’t been heard as much in a while, at least since he was hit by a train while chasing down a suspect. Polk County Police Officer Andy Anderson was spotted in the wilds of the PCPD Facebook page receiving donations on behalf of the department in recent days.
Anderson picked up six office chairs donated by The HON Company for use in the department’s patrol room, replacing some well worn chairs in the process. He also stopped by Wal-Mart, who donated new digital cameras for officers to use when collecting evidence. The previous models were six years old and in disrepair.
Today’s forecast
Basically, I could copy and paste the forecast from yesterday for today. The National Weather Service is calling for a 30% chance of rain again, but expect sunshine and heat again. Temperatures up to 94, with a heat index of 101. Chances of showers increase in the evening and night hours up to 40%, and a low of 70 is predicted overnight. I’m starting to wonder if in fact the NWS is copying and pasting the forecast. It looks to remain much the same through next week…
Something to watch this morning
Continuing with our songs of summer past, I’m taking folks back to the disco-fueled fun and insanity of 1976. I could not have made a more random but poignant find this morning, considering the mood of the nation of late.
Something to read this morning
Speaking of moods of the nation, it seems now President Trump believes COVID-19 is going to get worse, and is encouraging face masks. … What?
The Chinese consulate in Houston, Texas was closed and China isn’t happy about it. Vowing retaliation. Hrm. That’s not good.
Ummm, medical science? Why did it take until now to get a book on how skin tone impacts the presentation of symptoms (per the Washington Post…)
You can turn to many different news outlets for various coverage on a funeral shootout in Chicago, but Fox News? Mkay.
