Rockmart moves to 2-1 on season, heading to Sonoraville next
The Rockmart Yellow Jackets set the tone for region play on Homecoming night, and during a time when festivities usually cause distraction, they seemed instead to inspire a 42-7 win over the Coahulla Creek Colts.
The Jackets put up their scoring in the first half, adding six touchdowns to the board unanswered and giving up a score late in the game with a running clock as the Colts avoided being shut out in their 2021 meeting.
Among those big plays of the night was a second punt return for a touchdown this season for Dennis Sims, who ran for 52 yards in the second quarter for the big Homecoming win.
Additional opportunities to get into the end zone were had by Brett Washington and Nahzir Turner on the ground, and with quarterback JD Davis and then Mason Phillips under center also putting up big passes to Jakari Clark and Jojo Haynes on the night to propel the Jackets to the region-opening win on Friday night.
The Jackets are back on the road this week in region play heading to face a 2-0 Sonoraville squad. The 2-1 Jackets are on a two-game winning streak after dropping their first game of the season to Rome at home.
Rockmart will get a bye week on Sept. 24 before continuing region play against North Murray in a return home on October 1.
