Dawgs finish regular season strong

Younger guys get chance to shine as Cedartown finishes out regular season with Homecoming

It wasn’t exactly your traditional Homecoming game as the regular season came to a close on Friday night at The Doc, but one thing was for sure: the outcome was just what the Dawgs needed to get over a loss over Cartersville that shut down a undefeated run and a region title shot.

Cedartown went into the halftime locker room up 40-0 after a sustained drive in the first quarter ate time off the clock and ended with a Michael Gibbons Jr. touchdown from five yards out. It was followed up by a Pick Six play thanks to an interception brought down and run in without opposition by Demarcus Gardner just four plays later.

Gibbons punched in a second touchdown, Gardner grabbed a touchdown pass and a fumble recovery for a scoop and score by Juelz Davis put Cedartown square in the driver’s seat during the first half. Davis also scored on a long touchdown run in the first half as well.

Jett Abrams scored his first touchdown on a reception in the third quarter with a running clock, and Manny Holmes ran one in as the seconds ticked away in the fourth to end the game with a 52-0 final score.

Woodland was able to push forward with positive yards a handful of times against an otherwise lights out Cedartown defense, combined with an offense that couldn’t be stopped by the Wildcats throughout the night (especially during a second half running clock.)

Head Coach Jamie Abrams notched his 50th win as the head coach of the Cedartown Bulldogs on Friday night with Woodland’s Homecoming shutout.

Cedartown finished the regular season at 9-1 with the loss to Cartersville last week to fall to second in the region standings, so they’ll end in 7-4A as the second seed as they get a two week break before the playoffs begin.

The Dawgs would have finished the regular season with the rest of the state on Nov. 1 (minus those teams who need a Hurricane Helene makeup game on Nov. 8,) but Southeast Whitfield elected not to play a region schedule and left a hole in the schedule that couldn’t be replaced with another game.

The two week break gives Cedartown a chance to heal up for the playoffs. Isaiah Johnson sat out of Friday’s game with an ankle injury sustained during the Cartersville game (he played through the game despite in the injury.) Sam Smith is also suffering from a hand injury (playing in a cast.) Others who have some bumps and bruises from hard-hitting games this season will also get a chance to rest up and be ready for the opening round against Region 6-4A’s No. 3 team on Nov. 15.
