Cases of COVID-19 in Cedartown football team force cancellation of opener against Carrollton

Cedartown football fans hoping for a September 4 start to the season and a trip to Carrollton will just have to wait another week after the opener on the road has been called off.

Assistant Superintendent Greg Teems explained that cases of COVID-19 were reported among the Cedartown Bulldogs football squad, and because of the players involved it would have been burdensome for the two teams to play against one another.

He explained that the players have already been placed in quarantine, and that they’ll remain there until the 14 day period is up, but Georgia High School Athletic Association rules require an acclimation period before players can suit back up in helmets and full pads and be ready to play again.

“These players will be back in time to practice, but it is the acclimation period that will keep kids out of the game,” he said. “it would be a hardship to play that game with quarantined students. As we get cases in the school, you have to quarantine these people that were within six feet of them, and that sometimes includes athletes.”

So that required the two teams to call off the season opening match-up. Teems said he didn’t know whether Carrollton was seeking another opponent to play at such a late date.

The season opening game for the Bulldogs will now be against Rockmart on the road on Sept. 11.
