BASKETBALL: Rockmart opens season at home as JV, Varsity in action tonight

The Rockmart basketball season is getting underway with a homestand as the junior varsity boys, the Lady Jackets and the Jackets varsity squads all take on the Mt. Zion Eagles on their home court.

The JV boys will tip off in their opener at 4:30 p.m., followed by the Lady Jackets at 6 p.m. and the Jackets at 7:30 p.m. against the Eagles.

The squads are hoping to build off mixed results during the 2022-23 winter season.

Rockmart’s boys varsity squad put up a 15-14 run last year, going 8-5 in 7-AA to finish fourth and squeak in with a playoff berth. They got knocked out in the first round by Providence Christian Academy.

The Lady Jackets are definitely hoping to get back on track this year as Coach Steve Luke’s squad takes to the court tonight.

They went 8-19 overall last winter, finishing sixth in the region with a 3-9 finish and missed the playoffs for the second year in a row. They went from 23-7 overall in 2019-2020 to 8-19 in the span of the past four seasons, so the work begins for the mainly young squad heading into tonight’s game against Mt. Zion.

The Lady Eagles are coming into Rockmart off of a 2022-23 campaign that saw a third round playoff run, a 25-6 record and a region title.

The Eagles on the other hand are in a spot similar to the Rockmart boys: a campaign last winter that saw them dip below .500 at 8-19 and finish fourth in the region at 3-4. They were similarly knocked out in the first round of the playoffs.

Who comes away with in a win in this one? All three squads have a chance to pick up first game wins and come out of the gate strong.
