UPDATE: Tornado watch in effect, storms impacting Alabama moving NE toward Georgia

Update 3:

Strong storms continue to impact Polk and surrounding areas as storms rolled through and two different severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued tonight.

More than.1,000 customers lost power in an area north of Aragon, joining hundreds more who went dark during the overnight hours.

The area focused around Collard Valley from an area around Aragon north toward Silver Creek.

Areas around Rockmart had also lost power, knocking just under 200 customers into the dark as the second round of storms began to hit overnight.

So far that put the tally just over 2,000 who have lost electricity in the storms.

NWS Peachtree City put Polk and surrounding counties along the state line under a severe thunderstorm watch through 12:30 a.m. and a.flash flood warning until 6 a.m.

Update 2:

A strong thunderstorm pushing through Polk County tonight and still heading eastward already is causing headaches for residents.

Georgia Power is reporting just over 600 customers without power in an area east of Cedartown and into the city limits proper, along with more than a hundred in an area stretching from Young’s to Felton.

Outages are also impacting Buchanan, Bremen and Tallapoosa in Haralson County, along with small impacts in Rockmart and Taylorsville.

UPDATE 1:

Storms impacting Alabama that had at least a radar confirmed tornado in Talladega have weakened some as they approach Polk and surrounding counties, but some damage is being reported in the region from wind damage.

Power is out to dozens of customers in the Young’s Farm/Grove area, and some minor outages across the area are being reported ahead of the severe thunderstorms that are moving into Northwest Georgia and Metro Atlanta during the late night hours. Another few dozen customers in an area on Randall Road in southern Floyd County near Chubbtown were without power as well.

Temple-area customers in Carroll County also lost power within the last few minutes.

So far, these storms have produced tornadic activity in Central Alabama, and active tornadoes have been reported in the past two hours across their state. Flash flooding was also impacting some spots in these storms as well in spots.

Much of the thunderstorm activity has been focused on Floyd County and northward as it has moved into Georgia during the early evening hours.

Storms moving into the area from the southeast are impacting Cleburne and heading in the direction of western Polk County, and should reach the Borden Springs/Esom Hill area next.

The area remains under a tornado watch, but no additional watches or warnings have yet been put in place.

High winds and rain began impacting Polk County as the sun went down this evening, and now the threat of overnight severe weather looms in the skies above.

Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee all faced serious storms through the evening hours as the death toll from severe weather stretching across the nation increased to 26 so far.

The whole of Georgia was placed under a State of Emergency by Governor Brian Kemp earlier today ahead of the severe weather.

Already the storms are having a major impact across the nation in unexpected ways.

A Kansas dust storm today caused a major pileup that included 50 vehicles. Eight were reported to have died during the tragic incident.

Peachtree City forecasters helped their fellow office in Birmingham by picking up their duties issuing a tornado warning after a tornado passed close to the NWS office in Alabama.

Storm activity overnight caused deaths in Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi and Kansas so far. Damage is being reported across a swath of the country from Texas to Tennessee so far and many points in between.

Locally, officials have not yet reported any major issues due to the storm.

Tornado watches were put in place at 8:45 p.m. for much of Northwest Georgia and Metro Atlanta. Some counties in the far North Georgia mountains were under a warning as a portion of the system passed through from Northeast Alabama and Southeast Tennessee.

Currently the major threat is high winds as a wind advisory remains in effect through 5 a.m., and potential for severe thunderstorms that include heavy rain and damaging winds upward of 80 mph.

Currently, a storm system is tracking northeast from Central Alabama toward Northwest Georgia which has produced tornadoes that have caused damage. One cell currently sat as of this posting over Oxford, Alabama.
