Testing sites for COVID-19 closing up in June

When the month ends, two of three COVID-19 free testing sites in the Northwest Public Health District will be shutting down operations for the final time.

The testing sites in Catoosa County at CHI Memorial Hospital and Paulding County at Wellstar Paulding Hospital will no longer be available starting on June 1.

The final day of testing at both locations is Wednesday, May 31.

If someone needs free testing, the Floyd County site at the Coosa Valley Fairground will remain open until further notice.

The closings mark another step in winding down after the public health emergency declaration over COVID-19 after the virus caused a global pandemic beginning in 2020.

Per the Department of Public Health’s figures kept online, more than 2.3 million confirmed cases were reported in Georgia and 35,392 confirmed deaths were reported. The state reports the probable death figure at another 7,414 people.

The state reporting puts the case figure in Polk County at 10,862 confirmed since the pandemic began, and 180 confirmed deaths in the three years since the virus began to spread around the globe.

Further examination is needed on figures as more historical data becomes available over time on the health, economic and societal impacts caused by the pandemic, shutdowns and other problems brought about by the spread of the virus.
