SEVERE WEATHER UPDATE: Wind Advisory in effect; storms moving eastward

Stormy weather has already created damage and is spreading from Western Kentucky through Mississippi, bringing severe weather impacts to the southeast and areas beyond.

More of nature’s wrath is on the way toward our neck of the woods as the severe thunderstorms and high winds are increasing in intensity over the hours as warm temperatures hit a cold front pushing through.

Floyd, Haralson, Polk and Paulding counties remain under a threat level of 4 of 5 heading into the afternoon hours, and expectations from forecasters include damaging winds, tornadoes, hail and flooding.

Officials caution those who are seeking to travel during the evening and overnight hours to reconsider their plans as severe weather is expected to cause a variety of issues and hazards to drivers. Those could include flash flooding of roadways, downed trees and power lines, and damage to residences and property due to high winds or tornadoes – some of which could be strong.

NWS Peachtree City had not yet put Polk or any of the surrounding counties under any watches or warnings as of this posting early this afternoon. The timing of the storms could begin as soon as 8 p.m. this evening as a line of storms still over Mississippi gather strength over Alabama, drawing moist and warm air up from the Gulf and across the deep south.

The wind advisory in effect remains in place through Sunday morning at 5 a.m.

Already this line of stormy weather on the day has been deadly. More than a dozen are dead due to a tornado outbreak overnight and into the early morning hours in Missouri and Mississippi as tornadoes in those two states impacted communities near St. Louis and deep in the Mississippi Delta.

Check back for more updates as they become available.
