Rep. Greene joins other GOP members voting for McCarthy during first ballot for Speaker race

Most of the Republican House members have through the first roll call vote of the new 118th Congress have chosen Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California to take over as Speaker of the House, and Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene joined her compatriots in the majority in the first roll call vote of the new term.

Potential new Speaker Rep. McCarthy won’t have an easy path forward to the 218 house votes he needs to assume leadership of the chamber as the Republican Party took over the majority.

Several holdouts in the GOP have voted against McCarthy, with potential nominees including Rep. Andy Biggs of the Arizona fifth district, Rep. Jim Jordan of the Ohio 4th District, and Rep. Andy Harris of the Maryland first district.

Rep. Greene, who just began her second term in office after a victory over Democrat Marcus Flowers in the November election, has caucused with Representatives like Florida’s Matt Gaetz and Colorado’s Lauren Boebert, who have both voted against McCarthy for Speaker.

Democrats thus far are voting in lockstep for Rep. Hakim Jeffries of New York to take over as the Speaker. He’s the new minority leader after California Rep. Nancy Pelosi gave up her leadership spot in the party as the party lost the majority in the November election.

The Speaker election is the first business of the new term for the House of Representatives.

The vote hasn’t concluded yet, 435 ballots to collect. With three different Republicans now in the Speaker race, the first ballot will likely not come up with the 218 votes needed to gain the leadership role for McCarthy, requiring at least a second round of voting.

The House can’t move forward with any additional business until the speaker’s race is concluded.
