The first Pope from the United States has been elected by the College of Cardinals.

Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected today as the first pontiff from American soil, after having served in many roles including overseeing an office that appointed Bishops and pastoral experience in Peru as a missionary. He’s an Augustinian priest, and studied in the Dominican college at the Vatican.

Prevost’s new title is Pope Leo XIV.

He has still not appeared on the balcony overlooking St. Peter’s Square.

There’s no announcement yet, but the white smoke rose from the chimney over the Sistine Chapel building in St. Peter’s Square on Thursday, and crowds are now eagerly awaiting the College of Cardinals to reveal the new selection for the leader of the Catholic faith.

Vatican City is buzzing with excitement in the evening hours in Rome as the second day of Conclave concludes with a vote providing one of the number the majority needed to be elected as the new pontiff.

The Conclave began on Wednesday, weeks after mourning the death of Pope Francis after he passed away on April 21, just following Easter Sunday celebrations.

89 votes out of the College of Cardinals was required to gain the majority to become the new Pope. Four rounds of voting over the past two days were required to determine the outcome.
