Hurricane Ida makes landfall in Louisiana, Polk County likely to get rainfall from remnants as it tracks northeast over Tennessee

Expect some rainfall from the remnants of Hurricane Ida – by that point it’ll be Tropical Depression Ida – as the storm system pushes back outward to sea in the coming days after it made landfall in Louisiana on the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation wrought on the state 16 years ago.

The National Hurricane Center has Hurricane Ida losing power as it pushes over Louisiana and Mississippi over the next 24 hours and then across the Tennessee Valley and northeast toward Virginia and the nation’s capital before it returns to the Atlantic and could return to Tropical Storm strength in the coming days.

The storm made landfall with winds upward of 150 mph this afternoon at Port Fourchon, near Grand Isle, Louisiana where floodwaters were already rising from storm surge and damage is likely to be widespread when officials can get into the area after the storm passes. Hundreds of thousands of customers are already without power, and many areas around the storm were under mandatory evacuation before the weekend as Hurricane Ida quickly strengthened in the gulf after crossing over Cuba and moved into the Gulf of Mexico.

The Associated Press reported that on the anniversary of Katrina, the stronger storm made landfall just 45 miles west where one of the nation’s costliest and deadliest natural disasters took place 16 years prior.

Hurricane Ida’s power won’t reach the hilly country of Polk County, but much of the rainfall that comes along with the violent storms are expected from the outer bands. The National Weather Service puts the chance of rainfall and storms are increasing through the end of the weekend and into Monday. Stormy weather is predicted for Tuesday night, but by Thursday clear skies are set to return and sunny weather is expected for Labor Day weekend – at the moment.

Of note, additional tropical systems are being tracked at the moment. Tropical Storm Julian in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and not expected to threaten the continental United States is the 10th named storm of the hurricane season in 2021. Tropical Depression 10 in the Atlantic Basin is tracking toward the Caribbean Sea and could threaten to further develop.
