WEATHER CLOSURES: Schools, offices shutter ahead of Helene

Batten down the hatches, Polk. A storm is a-comin’ this way.

Schools, offices and more are announcing their plans to close temporarily for safety ahead of the arrival of Hurricane (likely to be Tropical Storm by the time it gets here) Helene to this corner of the world sometime during the overnight hours on Thursday night and Friday morning.

Here’s a list (so far, it’s going to get updated) of what is known to be closed in Polk:

CLOSURES

The Polk School District is on Learn from Home days on Thursday, September 26 and Friday, September 27 for students districtwide. Campuses will be closed. No info was yet available about plans for Homecoming or the planned game between Sonoraville and Rockmart.

Covenant Christian School have called off classes for Thursday, September 26 and Friday, September 27. They’ll be back in October after their fall break begins on Monday, September 30 and continues through October 4.

The Polk County Courthouses will be closed Friday due to the weather.

The administrative offices for Polk County will be closed on Friday. Essential personnel will be required to report to work.

The Polk County Health Department office in Cedartown will be closed for Friday.

The Haralson County Health Department is also closed on Friday.

Cedartown Recreation called off activities for Thursday and Friday.

Georgia Northwestern Technical College is closing their campuses at 3 p.m. on Thursday, September 26. They’ll remained closed across the system on Friday, September 27.

Haralson County Schools are going to close up on Friday, September 27. They’ll be open for students and staff on Thursday for regular classes. Bremen City Schools are also open on Thursday, but no afternoon activities or events planned for the evening will be going forward. They’ll be closed on Friday, September 27 ahead of the weather.

DELAYED OPENINGS

The City of Rockmart announced this morning they’ll delay opening administrative offices on Friday for the safety of staff until 12 p.m.

The City of Cedartown will delay opening until noon on Friday, September 27, for their offices on East Avenue.

Several local businesses have posted about delayed openings on Friday morning. Among those (I know for sure) have been Chick-fil-A of Rockmart and Ellianos coffee locations in both spots.

AREA CLOSINGS

Floyd County Schools announced this evening they are closed for both Thursday and Friday. Rome City Schools are on Independent Learning Days for the two days and campuses will be closed.

Gordon County Schools are closed. Calhoun City Schools are also closed.

Bartow County Schools announced closures for campuses on Thursday and Friday.
