The railroad crossing at Braswell Road was cleared just hours after a fire stopped a Norfolk Southern train on the tracks around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4.
Polk County Volunteer Fire Department personnel went out to the scene to put the fire out, and cleared the area after their help was needed.
The roadway was blocked until at least 5 p.m. while Norfolk Southern brought in another engine from Dallas to move the freight cars that were being hauled on the line that goes west through Rockmart then northward toward Aragon and Floyd County.
No immediate cause for the fire had been determined by the Polk County Volunteer Fire Department at the time of the incident, officials reported.
The fire is the latest area incident involving trains. In September, a two cars on a Norfolk Southern train in Lindale derailed, and a passing train struck them and unable to stop ran into a parked train that was unoccupied at the time.
A Lindale railroad crossing was closed at the time of the incident.
