Volunteer firefighters were out this weekend asking for the public to pass a few bucks their way to help a local family who just lost their child.
The Polk County Volunteer Fire Department raised $5,700 at Rockmart’s Walmart on Saturday, and increased that total by another $7,300 at the Kroger in Cedartown on Sunday to help the Ingram family.
They lost two-year-old Briggs this past Friday after a weeklong battle to stay alive. Briggs’ father, a local volunteer firefighter and a fulltime firefighter with Bremen’s department, kept his son alive long enough on July 17 at Lake Martin in Alabama after he nearly drowned.
He passed on July 22 from the injuries sustained in that incident at UAB Children’s Hospital in Birmingham.
Despite the sad news relayed on Saturday evening, volunteer firefighters were back out on Sunday during the day asking for donations from customers in Cedartown.
The “Fill the Boot for Briggs” campaign was also taking place at the same time online on GoFundMe, where the department gathered additional funds as well.
So far, that makes the final total of money raised over the weekend at $15,895.
Officials from the Fire Department will continue to ask for the public to help with funding efforts for the family as they grieve the loss of their son. Those who want to give can reach out to the Polk County Volunteer Fire Department via Facebook for more information about how to help.
