Update 5:57 p.m.:
Power remains out for thousands of customers – and might be for at least a couple of days – and the school day is called off for Friday in the latest update in the aftermath of severe weather from Hurricane Zeta.
Georgia Power’s outage map as of 5:50 p.m. showed widespread outages across the area. Cable and phone providers for internet also are down as well across Polk County. Some power has been restored around Cedartown and Rockmart, but areas of damage remain.
(Additional thanks go out to Gail Conner, Tina Noles and Gary Martin for contributing additional photos to the above slideshow.)
The Polk School District announced on Facebook earlier in the day that there will not be classes again on Friday. Because of the power and internet outages, PSD is not requiring students to use Friday as a Distance Learning Day as they had intended for today. Employees report back on Monday, and students on Tuesday on a regular schedule with an unexpected break before Halloween.
Check back for more updates through the evening as they become available on power and internet outages.

A survey of damage around Cedartown and Rockmart is showing a lot of limbs and trees that were knocked down into roadways, at least two homes were damaged and some cleanup is going to be required heading into Halloween thanks to tropical weather moving through with the remnants of Hurricane Zeta causing havoc.
Power has been restored for some customers, but a good portion of Polk County remains out as this map will indicate from Georgia Power as of 11 a.m.

Crews are out in the field and working to restore connectivity to customers as soon as possible.
Also, debris remains in roadways across the county as well, so if you get out and drive please do so with caution. Wet pine needles on the roadway will cause slips if drivers are not careful. Officials have asked people to limit their travel as much as possible.
Lines were forming at restaurants that did have power this morning, like Lively’s BBQ in Cedartown, and officials were out clearing limbs and trees from roadways.
Of note, a portion of Antioch Road remains closed toward the Cedartown side. Drivers who need to get into the area can utilize Morton Bend and Huntington Roads to get around the closure.
No injuries have yet been reported due to severe weather.
Check back for additional updates as they become available.

Trees are down, power is out and at least two homes have been damaged according to Polk County Public Safety Director Randy Lacey.
Lacey said that there were at least 61% of the customers without power at this time. He also said that multiple trees and power lines are down across the county.
So far, no major flooding has been reported.
Rain and wind remain over the area as the remnants of Hurricane Zeta continue to pass over Northwest Georgia.
Two homes have so far been damaged, one on Antioch Road and the other on West John Hand Road. Lacey reported that a family was stuck inside the home on Antioch Road, but no injuries were reported in either case.
Drivers on Cave Spring Road will need to detour around a tree down at Girard Avenue blocking the intersection. Girard Avenue from College Street and through the intersection of Cave Spring Road is blocked to traffic.
Public Works crews are already out helping to clear damage from roadways.
Travel with caution at this time.
