UPDATE: Storms cause culvert washout on Springdale Road; Rockmart flooding

Officials are reporting that ‘significant’ flooding from heavy rains filling Euharlee Creek impacted the downtown area of Rockmart.

High waters at one point caused drainage issues with the sewer plant, and reports from residences of sewage backing up into their drains came in via city officials.

No issues are currently reported with the regular water system.

City Manager Stacey Smith confirmed flooding in the basement of the Rockmart Theatre, the Rockmart Depot and Dairy Queen.

A residence on Williamson Street saw a tree fall through the middle of the house as well during overnight storms. Fortunately, no one was home at the time.

Polk County didn’t get by totally unscathed as stormy weather passed through with high winds, heavy rain and a lightning show overnight Saturday and into Sunday morning’s early hours.

Among the damage caused beyond downed trees and power outages across the county was flooding causing a culver washout on Springdale Road.

Polk County Police are asking that drivers avoid the area where the roadway washed out above the culvert near Sharon Drive in the Rockmart area.

It is the latest washout that has shut down a roadway in Polk County in recent weeks. Stormy weather just over a month ago in February washed out Johnson Lake Road and sent a driver to the hospital after their vehicle ended up in a sinkhole caused by the loss of another culvert.

The roadway will be closed for at least today as county public works officials are out dealing with debris from the storms.

Flooding also impacted another local business: the Hive Play and Cafe in Rockmart. They saw water invade the business when they began assessing damage earlier this morning.

Cedartown’s Big Spring Park was also flooded this morning. Usually this occurs during high rain events as the city closes off water flow into Cedar Creek from the Big Spring – the city’s main water supply – to avoid floodwater mixing in with the spring water, causing potential contamination and other problems related to high water rises.

Commissioner Jessica Payton shared these photos on social media:

As of time of writing, hundreds of customers of Georgia Power were still without electricity this morning. Crews are out across West Georgia and Metro Atlanta reconnecting customers, including here in Polk in areas around Young’s Farm/Station, Antioch, Aragon, Collard Valley, Morgan Valley and more.

Power outages have impacted customers in Haralson County and Paulding County as well following high wind damage from the overnight high winds impacting the area.

Among the damage caused eastward in Paulding was a gas station awning that blew into its store after being toppled by high winds.

Trees were also down across several roadways overnight.
