Later this month, the latest addition to the downtown Cedartown area will open and honor one of golfing’s great legends who hails from right here in Polk County.
Doug Sanders, known as the “Peacock of the Fairways” during his decades on the course playing in the PGA and four runner-up spots in major championships among wins at 20 championships (24 professional wins,) will soon have a museum dedicated both to his career and large collection of golf memorabilia that will soon be on display for the public to enjoy. Sanders, who died in April at the age of 86, passed his collection onto the Morris family in years past, and plans were made to put together a museum.
The Doug Sanders Golf Museum will be located at 117 Woodland St., Cedartown. It is located just around the corner from another Morris family location, the Cedartown Museum of Coca-Cola Memorabilia.
Included in the move is the Doug Sanders statue that was on the Sports Walk of Fame outside of the courthouses in downtown Cedartown, which is now placed in front of the museum.
His collection was vast and includes signatures from his fellow golfers, astronauts, actors and actresses, and presidents that not all of the collection can be put on display at once, according to the Museum’s Executive Director, Daniel Morris. What has been set up is notable examples of what Sanders kept over the years, including a Hall of Presidents by itself and a wall of Masters flags with the names of winners and participants, and even a display of the famously missed putt at the 1970 British Open at St. Andrews.
Look for more on the museum ahead of their August 29 opening.
