Seaborn Jones Park still underwater this afternoon

Anyone who was hoping to enjoy the Silver Comet Trail this evening before the sun went down were in for a rude surprise on the east side of the county, as the entire area around Seaborn Jones Park in downtown Rockmart was underwater.

Euharlee Creek was well above its normal banks and just maybe a few feet away from touching the bottom of the Church Street bridge as of late this afternoon in the Rockmart area following a whole lot of rain from stormy weather that impacted the whole of Polk County and the surrounding area.

Currently, the floodgates are in place to keep water from mixing with the Big Spring – Cedartown’s water supply – until Cedar Creek drops down to under flooding levels. The city completed that task this morning while waters were still rising.

Some of the localized flooding around the area drained off as the sun was going down this afternoon, and the National Weather Service lifted a flood warning that was in place until 1:30 p.m.

Now the weather is turning back toward something expected for a winter forecast. Temps are only up to 59 as of this evening’s predictions for Thursday, with a low down to 34. The first full week of 2023 will end with the thermometer at 55 for the high, and 34 again for the low.

Saturday will be sunny and temperatures are set to get up to 62, but are back down to 58 and chances of rain on Sunday, with lows in the lower 40s throughout the weekend. Chances for showers and cooler temps remain in place starting on Monday night again as Polk County could be in for another soaking next week.
