Roundabout work continues at Hwy. 278 W intersection

A Georgia Department of Transportation project remains ongoing in western Polk County as the area is getting its first roundabout intersection change, but unlikely before year’s end.

The project that has been in the works for the past few years is making some progress despite weather delays over the summer and in recent weeks as contractors have moved from building up new lanes along the Adamson Road portion of the roundabout to merge onto the Highway 100 cutoff.

The project seeks to increase safety at the intersection of Highway 278 West where it meets Canal Street, the Highway 100 Cutoff that connects to Prior Station Road and Adamson Road where multiple wrecks and fatalities have occurred over the years.

The GDOT project was first put forth in 2021, and since it sits on a state route is under the auspices of the Department of Transportation to determine how traffic control should work at the intersection.

County Commissioners did previously approve a request that the County Government be responsible for lighting in the area.

Work began on the new roundabout earlier this year when crews began clearing the way and installing new drainage systems around the intersection.
