Report: Two jailed on burglary charges, items recovered

An attempted burglary ended with an uncle and cousin in jail after they broke into a relative’s home on Wednesday midday, according to Polk County Police reports.

Police arrested Reuben Jerome Douglas Burge, 50, and Reuben Douglas Burge, 70, Wednesday afternoon when the pair were found by Polk County Police fleeing from the scene of a Spratlin Street burglary attempt during the lunch hour.

Per officer reports, the brother of the victim’s home came to check on it and found the younger Burge coming “out of the bushes” and was surprised to see the relative show up. He asked for a ride to the store to get beer he never purchased, and then wanted to go to Second Street.

When the relative arrived back home, they found the elder Burge behind the wheel of a black car which had his brother’s TV in the back seat. Looking further, he saw a small safe and a Playstation in the back as well.

The relative confronted the elder Burge, and admitted to punching him in the jaw, after which he fled on foot down railroad tracks. Police were able to catch up with him later, at a Martin Luther King Jr. address in Rockmart.

The younger Burge was found by officers crossing Morgan Valley Road a quarter mile away from where the relative found they were burglarizing his brother’s house.

Damage was done to the back door that was kicked in during the incident, and the house was ransacked. The expensive items were returned to the brother of the owner, who had been booked in jail just two days before.

Police got the relative to positively identify both men, who were then taken into custody and booked into the Polk County Jail.

Both were being held with bond denied on felony burglary charges.
