Report: Temple woman suspected of DUI fought with officers, jailers and kicked out PCPD cruiser partition

Lori Catherine Ayers

A Temple woman remained in the Polk County Jail on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after she was arrested on Saturday evening after being suspected of driving under the influence, then fighting with officers and jailers while being taken into custody and later booked.

Polk County Police reported that they arrested Lori Catherine Ayers, 21, of a Temple address, after she was stopped Saturday evening around 8:15 p.m. at the intersection of Youngs Valley and Cobb Mountain Road.

It was initially reported as a potential wreck after a witness watched Ayers jump the railroad tracks further up the roadway. She was still in the car, and the witnesses told police they believed she was intoxicated.

Officers went to talk to Ayers, and per the report she appeared to police to be intoxicated due to slurred and slowed speech, and “she could not give a consistent statement and seemed confused.” Police asked Ayers if she had anything to drink, and she admitted to taking 1-3 shots “earlier in the day.”

When asked for her ID, she instead sat back in the car and tried to light a cigarette. She refused to give her driver’s license over a second time, and then when asked to get out of the car also refused.

Ayers was reported to have then gotten combative when police tried to get her out of the car.

One officer received a minor injury to his hand while they tried to cuff Ayers. They eventually got her to a patrol vehicle, where she again fought police trying to get her in the back seat. They finally got the doors closed, and took her off to the Polk County Jail.

Ayers wasn’t done yet. During the ride to the Polk County Jail, officers reported that she “began to kick the partition in the patrol vehicle and was able to break it enough to get foot through it” and then tried to kick both officers taking her to booking. They cranked up the lights and sirens in order to get her to the jail faster.

Her fight continued when she struggled with jailers, and ultimately was forced into a restraint chair. She somehow also broke a handcuff key during the fight with jailers.

When police back at the scene were able to inventory the car, they found “an amount of marijuana, an open alcohol container, and a pill bottle with 3 full pills and several broken pieces of pills.”

Ayers was ultimately charged with felonies for interference with government property and possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance, plus misdemeanors for driving under the influence, too fast for conditions, open container violation, two counts of obstruction of law enforcement officers, marijuana possession and criminal trespass.

She remained in custody as of this posting.
