Rockmart Police took a man into custody on Sunday after he was pulled over by police when his tag information came back with a suspended license and registration, and he was found to be in possession of methamphetamine, per reports.
Police arrested Rusty Allen Hitchcock, 39, of 302 Peggy Cole Bridge, Villa Rica, when he was stopped on Sunday around 6:30 p.m. when officers on patrol spotted him on Forrest Avenue in the middle of the roadway, then making a U-turn and driving away near the Forrest Avenue Housing Project.
He was stopped at the intersection of Pine Street and Jones Avenue when police pulled his information on the computer and found Hitchcock – not yet identified as the driver – was driving on an expired registration and suspended license.
Police found Hitchcock behind the wheel, and asked him for his license. He said he didn’t have one, and officers asked him to step out of his truck.
Officers noted in their report that “Once Hitchcock was out of the vehicle, he began pacing the immediate area and became extremely talkative about the reason in which he was in the area of Forrest Avenue.”
Noting this behavior, officers cuffed Hitchcock and asked him if there was anything illegal inside the truck. He told officers no, but gave consent to search. They found a cigarette wrapper with suspected methamphetamine inside, and decided to take him into custody.
Rockmart Police officers did not find any further narcotics on his person.
He was taken to the Polk County Jail without further incident.
Hitchcock remained in jail as of this posting without bail on felony charges of possession of methamphetamine, manufacture/possess/etc controlled or counterfeit substance, or marijuana, near park/housing project, and misdemeanor charges for obscuring tag frame or tinted tag covers prohibited and driving while license suspended or revoked.
