Report: bad lane change, broken taillight leads to drug discovery in RPD traffic stop

Freddy Lamar Williams

A man who turned illegally and had a busted taillight ended up in jail after being stopped early Sunday morning by Rockmart Police and was found with cocaine, according to reports.

Rockmart Police reported that Freddy Lamar Williams, 52, of 1005 Cedartown Highway, Apt. 4, Rockmart, was driving 2012 Nissan Rogue when an officer sitting and watching the West Elm Street corridor spotted Williams pull out into the street and make an improper lane change from the Marathon gas station around 12:45 a.m. on Sunday, July 18.

Per the report, the officer began to follow and noticed that Williams had a busted passenger taillight and pulled him over.

Police noticed that Williams was acting nervous, and called for the PCSO K-9 to sniff out the vehicle.

The officer reported that written warnings were ready to hand over to Williams, but then the K-9 Nero walked around the vehicle for a “free air sniff” and alerted to “the presence of illegal narcotics inside the vehicle.”

Once Williams was cuffed, police conducted a search of the vehicle and found straws with suspected cocaine residue on them in various places around the SUV, along with a small glass vial also believed to be cocaine.

Police reported that Williams protested the arrest and told police that “you’re going to charge me with a little bit of stuff, it’s not even mine” but was told because it was in his vehicle, it was under his possession and he was taken to the Polk County Jail for booking.

Williams was later released on a $7,000 bond on a felony charge of possession of a schedule II controlled substance, and misdemeanors including two counts of possession and use of drug-related objects, as well as tag lights required and improper left or right turn.
