The following Public Service Announcement is a free item for Polk Today readers, since we keep seeing it pop up today on social media. Happy Fourth! – KtE
Fellow Polk County residents, Happy Independence Day with an important reminder for those who have been celebrating the holiday weekend with fireworks: be considerate of your neighbors when it comes to when you shoot off your fireworks this year.
However, it’s also worth noting the following items: there are reasons to call 911 today, and then there are reasons NOT to call emergency operators.
Operators would appreciate everyone to avoid calling 911 for merely setting off fireworks, for debris landing in your yard, or for noise complaints that are bothering others or pets.
The fireworks laws in the state of Georgia allow for use between 10 a.m. and 11:59 p.m., with exception of New Years which allows fireworks until 1 a.m.
Also: DO NOT POINT FIREWORKS OF ANY KIND AT ANOTHER PERSON. DO NOT HOLD ONTO LIT FIREWORKS.
Fireworks also can cause serious burns or other injuries, which should be treated by medical professionals.
Remember too that fireworks are age-appropriate explosive devices, and should be handled by responsible adults who preferably haven’t been drinking.
Do be considerate of those who might be suffering from PTSD and the impact that fireworks might have on neighbors who are veterans.
