Police: Shooting victim recovering from wound, father-in-law remains in jail

A man who was shot earlier this week is recovering from his wound, and his father-in-law who was captured not long after it happened remains in jail with bond denied on felony charges.

Polk County Police Chief Kenny Dodd reported additional details from the Tuesday shooting of 41-year-old Mark Harris, who was airlifted out to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta for further treatment.

Harris was shot in the chest by a .38 caliber round from a .357 handgun on Tuesday around 5:30 p.m. on Carter Mountain Road in between Cedartown and Rockmart. He remained at Grady Memorial Hospital where he is recovering from the wound.

Richard Wayne Tibbetts, 74, of a Carter Mountain Road address as well, remained in jail with bond denied on felony charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain crimes.

The incident also involved Tibbetts’ grandson, who he also took a shot at on Tuesday evening but did not hit after firing and striking Harris, according to Dodd. He said no motive had yet been established as to why the shooting incident occurred, but that mental issues might have been a factor.

Dodd said that only five rounds were in the handgun used by Tibbetts, and that the situation could have been worse if he had the ability to shoot at both Harris and his grandson.

Tibbetts was located not long after the shooting in the woods around the area it took place on Carter Mountain Road and taken in without any further injuries to himself or law enforcement. Dodd said previously that Tibbetts has not spoken to law enforcement about the incident.

Official help came from the Rockmart Police, Aragon Police, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Redmond EMS and Rockmart Fire and Rescue.
