Police: Cedartown teen’s death ruled a suicide

The Polk County Police issued a statement this morning about the death of Jesus Betancourt-Torres, found over the weekend by a search party in a wooded area near Prior Station Road on Saturday.

In the release, police said they have ruled the 17-year-old’s death as a suicide. He was a Cedartown High School sophomore.



Here’s the full statement from the PCPD:

On Saturday (February 13, 2021) at 11:42, Detectives with the Polk County Police Department were requested by the Cedartown Police Department in reference to the discovery of Jesus Betancourt-Torres (17 year old male), deceased.

Mr. Betancourt-Torres was discovered in a heavily wooded area in the four hundred block of Prior Station Road by a search party consisting of family members, community members, and emergency personnel. Upon the discovery of Mr. Betancourt-Torres, the scene was immediately secured by the Cedartown Police Department.

The death investigation was led by the Polk County Police Department due to the area in which Mr. Betancourt-Torres was located.



The tragic death of Mr. Betancourt-Torres has been ruled a suicide, upon the completion of a thorough death investigation. This came after consultation / examination from the Medical Examiner’s Office of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. We do not suspect any foul play in this case.

Our office will not comment on the manner of death, or anything further with the case at this time.

Our hearts go out to the family of Mr. Betancourt-Torres, and the Cedartown community as a whole.
