Local and state officials are still investigating this evening after the discovery of a body on Morgan Valley Road.
Polk County Police Chief Kiki Evans reported that the body has been removed from the scene and transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for autopsy and identification.
Currently, authorities are only able to report they found the remains of an unidentified female earlier this afternoon.
Polk County Police investigators were searching the roadway on foot on Morgan Valley Road for a missing person when they discovered the remains at 12:55 p.m.
Evans reports that her department’s detectives are working with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation as they look further into the matter.
Police had an area of Morgan Valley Road closed for a time while the recovery of the body was underway.
It is now open to drivers.

Polk County investigators are out on Morgan Valley Road at this time involved in a death investigation, along with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
The Polk County Coroner’s Office have also responded alongside investigators.
Per officials from the PCPD, investigators found the unidentified body of an individual while searching the area.
Officials are asking for people to avoid the area at this time as they complete their work.
Additional information will be forthcoming once officials are able to identify the next of kin.
