UPDATE: Officials say at least 2 injured in late night crash on Highway 101 involving Rome HS bus

UPDATE 11:46 p.m.:

Georgia State Patrol has arrived on the scene of a bus crash involving Rome High School football players, and will be taking over the official investigation of the incident according to Polk County Police Chief Kiki Evans.

Evans also reported the number of injured transported to the hospital has increased to five individuals in all.

No immediate information was available about the extent of injuries suffered or the victims as this time.

Rome City Schools posted an update around 11:30 p.m. assuring the public that all who were on the bus have been accounted for so far.

“A school bus has been involved in a wreck on Highway 101 returning from the football scrimmage. All students and staff have been accounted for and emergency services are on the scene. We will provide updates as soon as they become available.” – Rome City Schools Facebook Page.

In the past few minutes, RCS updated to note that all the buses were back on the roadway and would arrive back at the Rome High campus within the next 30 minutes.

UPDATE ~11:30 p.m.:

Polk County Police Chief Kiki Evans reports that at least two people are being transported to area hospitals with injuries following a crash involving a bus and another vehicle near the Polk-Floyd County line.

Evans provided some further details as the incident continues to unfold, noting that the crash took place at the intersection of Old Rome Road and Doc Moates Road at Highway 101, south of Burton’s Store in the Aragon area.

Additional injuries are likely to be reported as first responders continue to work on the scene, Evans noted.

Photos of the crash circulating online show the bus rolled over when struck by another vehicle.

Highway 101 will remain closed for the time being.

ORIGINAL POSTING 11:16 p.m.:

A local official has confirmed reports this evening of a crash on Highway 101 just inside the Polk County line near Floyd County.

A second official has confirmed the crash involved a Rome High School bus carrying players and staff home from the scrimmage at Rockmart High School.

No immediate information was available on injuries. No fatalities have thus far been reported.

The crash took place near the intersection of Highway 101 and Prospect Road near Aragon sometime around 10:45 p.m., when initial reports were made on social media.

Highway 101 is closed to traffic at this time in the Aragon area. Avoid the area and detour around for the next several hours.
