Motorcycle rider dies of injuries sustained in wreck in Rockmart

An Alabama man who was riding his motorcycle died after he crashed the intersection of Highway 278 and Business 6 heading back into downtown Rockmart.

Rockmart Police reported that Johnny Dewayne Mahan, 50, of Wilsonville, Alabama was traveling north on a Honda motorcycle Friday evening around 6:45 p.m. north on Business 6 heading back toward Highway 278 when he crossed over the roadway and went over the guard rail and cutoff that was previously Old Rockmart Highway.

When police found him, CPR was performed on the scene and paramedics who carried him to Floyd-Polk Medical Center on Friday continued lifesaving efforts, but he was pronounced dead at the Cedartown-area hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at 7:25 p.m. in the hospital emergency room, according to Polk County Coroner Norman Smith.

Though he had an Alabama drivers license, Smith said he was living in Cedartown with his son.
