Georgia State Patrol reported that the cause of a crash between a Rome High School bus and a car was caused by a suspected DUI.

Officials from GSP reported this morning in their preliminary investigation of the incident that the driver of a Nissan Versa was responsible for the crash with the Rome High bus taking athletes home from a scrimmage game in Rockmart late Thursday night.

Per their preliminary findings in the investigation, the driver of the Nissan Versa was navigating a curve near Doc Moates Road/Old Rome Road/Highway 101 just north of the Aragon city limits, while the bus was also in the same curve.

The driver of the Versa failed to maintain her lane, and struck the bus in the driver side rear wheel causing it to lose control, and leaving the west shoulder of the roadway before coming to an uncontrolled stop after spinning.

The bus when struck went off the roadway as well, and it rolled and struck a power pole before it came to a stop.

GSP noted that the driver was suspected to be under the influence at the time of the incident, and took them into custody. They did not list a name at this time for the arrest.

Polk Today has reached out to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office for more information about the alleged suspect.

At least five were injured in the incident, but GSP has not officially confirmed that number and officials said until a final report is filed, will not be able to provide that information.

However they did not all those injured were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

Check back for more details as they become available.
