A trial date for a man facing the death penalty on multiple murder charges after going on a shooting spree in January 2019 is still far off for the time being, with a new attorney now representing him on behalf of the Office of the Capital Defender.
Daylon Delon Gamble, 29, was taken into custody more than two years ago in Indianapolis, Indiana after he fled from Rockmart and the State of Georgia following the shooting deaths of four people, and the serious injury of a fifth on January 24, 2019.
He has remained in custody since being brought back to Georgia, and District Attorney Jack Browning announced months after the arrest that he planned to seek the death penalty for the murders of Helen Rose Mitchell, 48, and Jaequnn Davis, 19, both of 503 Williamson St., and of Arkeyla Perry, 24, and Dadrian Cummings, 26, both at 319 Rome St. in Rockmart.
A fifth man, Peerless Brown, was also shot in the head but survived his wounds.
On Monday, June 28, Gamble was back in court to face a status hearing on the case after his previous attorneys left the case after they left the Office of the Capital Defender in recent weeks. A new attorney on the case, Perisha Dixon, presented herself to the court during the hearing and a new status hearing update is expected when parties return to court on July 23.
Family members of the victims – who have been to every court hearing held so far – were back in court for the proceedings on Monday afternoon.
Tallapoosa Superior Court Chief Judge Meng Lim previously ruled that a gag order be put in place for those involved in the case.
The case is just one of several that remains on the docket involving murders in Polk County over the past years, including but not limited to the shooting death of Detective Kristen Hearne in 2017.
Check back for more details on this case following the next status hearing in July.
