Four way stops get approval from Cedartown Commission

A vote on proposals to make three intersections on College Street into four-way stops got approval from the Cedartown City Commission during their Monday evening regular session for the month of February.

As one of many items on the agenda on February 12, the City Commission approved a plan they discussed previously to change the intersections of College Street at West Jule Peek Avenue, West Girard Avenue, and the not-quite aligned four-way of Wissahickon Avenue/East Avenue/College Street.

The latter intersection that brings together College Street, East Avenue and Wissahickon will now permanently become a four-way stop. That change began as soon as the Commission approved it on Monday night, so the stop lights previously in place will no longer direct traffic after the temporary stop signs were already put in place.

The other two four-way intersection changes where College meets Girard and Jule Peek Avenues will get stops signs in all directions beginning on March 18.

City Manager Edward Guzman said that should give drivers enough time to prepare for the change in the driving patterns on College Street for the change to go into effect.

The steps are being taken well in advance of a forthcoming bridge replacement project on North Main Street that is expected to start sometime this spring. Contractors have been meeting with the city in recent days to plan for how to reroute utilities connected via the aging bridge while the demolition and replacement work is being completed.

During the project, the bridge replacement will require that portion of North Main Street impacted to shut down, and vehicle traffic will detour down College Street until the work is completed.
