Polk County’s first responders have themselves run toward danger in all their years of service, and they showed their support for brethren who did the same two decades ago when the nation was under attack by terrorists who flew planes into the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and caused passengers to crash a flight in Shanksville, Pennsylvania to prevent further bloodshed on a tragic day two decades past.

The Silver Comet Trail in the Fish Creek area played host on Saturday morning, September 11, to a group of first responders who remembered the tragic events of the day 20 years past with a two-mile walk.

Donning gear, carrying flags and meeting together in the early morning hours when the World Trade Center was struck by planes on September 11, 2001, the walk provided Polk County Volunteer Firefighters and Polk County Police officers a chance to honor fallen brothers and sisters who gave their lives in an effort to save others during the attacks.

Along with the Cedartown Fire Department’s display of the Stars and Stripes in front of the fire hall downtown and sirens wailing during the times when the towers were struck and collapsed, American Legion members also remembered the anniversary of the attacks of Sept. 11 at the Polk County Fair, and a special ceremony was also held during the Rockmart Pro Rodeo at Haney Arena Saturday night.
