Couple jailed after stealing $6,000 from convenience store on Prior Station Road

A couple remained in jail over the holiday weekend each with a felony charge after security camera footage positively identified them taking $6,000 from the register of the Cedartown Food Mart on Prior Station Road late on Sunday night.

Polk County Police charged Jacqueline Babcock, 32, and Matthew Nelson Babcock, 40, both of 193 Person Road, Cedartown, with a single felony charge each after they were found at the Waffle House in Cedartown not long after they left the Cedartown Food Mart empty and with the stolen funds late at night on Sunday, July 3, 2022.

Police originally got involved when a customer called 911 to note that when they arrived at the convenience store around 11:50 p.m., the store was open but no clerk was on duty. The customer told police that when they placed their items on the counter for purchase, it seemed odd that no one was around inside the store which is usually open 24 hours a day.

An officer arrived and began taking a report, they got in touch with the owner who said someone should have been on duty and that another employee would be on the way.

Reports stated a manager arrived shortly after, and when searching the store for anything missing found the register was cleaned out of $6,000 in cash. Security footage was pulled up, and police got a clear view of Jaqueline – noted as Jackie on her timecard which was punched out two hours before the crime was committed – pulling the money out of the register, placing it in a backpack, and handing it off to Matthew.

Police were able to track down the couple at the Cedartown Waffle House on North Main Street, and began to question the pair. Police found the story didn’t match up, and with the video evidence in hand were able to charge the two.

Jacqueline Babcock remained in the Polk County Jail as of this posting with no bond set on a felony theft by taking charge. Matthew Babcock was also being held without bail set on a felony party to a crime charge.
