City offices shut down due to power outage Thursday, get busy for Saturday Trunk or Treat

The City of Rockmart didn’t let a small issue like a power outage keep them from getting work done and doing something to benefit the community all at the same time.

Prior to COVID, the city hosted special needs youth to come to the city gym, where departments would compete with one another to see who had the best area with entertainment for the youth.

Because last year the city hosted a Drive-Thru Trunk or Treat, they have since had to change up their plans for how to interact with the community during the holidays.

This year, returning on Saturday to the Trunk or Treat, city departments are lining up and handing out candy to those who want to stop by the Nathan Dean Sports Complex from 4 to 6 p.m.

Getting ready for that and despite nasty weather during the day, city employees were busy stuffing bags of candy while the power was out at city hall today.

City Manager Stacey Smith said it shows a continued commitment by the staff to not only enjoy the holidays, but give back to the youth of Rockmart.

“The Public Works guys, they really get into Halloween and making sure that all the kids who stop by have a great time. I walked down there after Brent (Edwards) called me to come see what they were up to, and they were all in there. They filled those bags so full. I asked my guys what they were filling the bags with, and they replied “with candy and love.””

The city hopes to see smiling faces and great costumes for the 2021 event. Those who want to participate should line up from the American Legion side to enter, and exit onto Highway 278.

From the City’s Facebook page:

Bad weather and a power outage isn’t slowing down our Public Works Department. They are staying busy stuffing candy bags for the Drive-Thru Trick or Treat this Saturday from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.
