Cedartown Library renovation project set to start soon

$1.6 million+ project will provide major upgrade long in the works to the facility

The Cedartown Public Library will be closing down soon – just temporarily – as work is set to get underway in the coming weeks and months on a renovation project for the facility that has long been in the works.

City Commissioner Dale Tuck was excited by the news that the city had finally chosen the low bidder for the work to get underway.

“I’m glad we are getting this done, because this has been on my bucket list for a long time,”
Tuck said before the approval of the cost for the library project on Monday evening, July 8.

The much-needed renovation of the library will see the facility shut down starting July 29 and shift the collection to a temporary home inside of a wing of the Cedartown Performing Arts Center. This will allow for the public to still enjoy the collection free of charge while the work is being undertaken.

The CPAC’s wing will be open starting on August 12 for the public to access the library collection.

The low bid came in at $1,665,528 for all the work to be done on both interior and exterior of the property by Caliber 1 Construction which also includes a roof replacement for the building. Caliber 1 Construction had officials on hand for the Monday night Cedartown City Commission meeting where the final cost of the project received unanimous approval.

If money is left over from costs on interior work, the city is looking at options on making aesthetic improvements to the library’s exterior while retaining its longtime look and charm.

When asked, those officials said they’ll begin staging for the project to get underway just as soon as the library has their materials and other items out of the way.

The timeline for the project puts a conclusion on the work sometime mid-2025.
