BRIDGE OUT

Demolition work gets underway for new bridge on North Main Street in Cedartown

The day finally came, and for sure drivers are muttering mischief under their breath at officials at all level for daring to block the way to their destination.

Wednesday morning, January 15 greeted commuters using North Main Street as their main path toward work, school and shopping found the detour is underway due to the 9o-day sprint to replace a short span over the 1000 Yard Branch near the intersection of Girard Avenue.

The state Department of Transportation is leading the way on the project several years in the making, and after delays in getting staging completed and utility lines moved, the demolition has finally begun.

Heavy Equipment began busting up the deck of the bridge to start off the three month closure, and contractors are required to have the work completed by springtime or face fines for keeping the business route of Highway 27 closed by going over the required contract time.

Assuming all goes to plan, the bridge should be back in operation by April 15.

Drivers are now required to detour around the route by using Jule Peek Avenue to North College Street, and then turn left again at West Girard Avenue to get back on North College Street to complete the detour route.

Those traveling through the area may wish to consider alternative routes to downtown Cedartown or local businesses that are within the area.

City officials anticipating the new influx of traffic in the residential neighborhood corridor along North College Street installed four-way stops in 2024, and set the speed limit at no more than 35 mph for the entire stretch of the roadway from West John Hand Road down to Canal Street on South Main Street.
