The Polk County Police Department released the following information about the incident at Formby Trail this afternoon. Additional updates about this incident will be made available when possible:
On September 18, 2020 at 11:40 hours, Patrol Officers with the Uniformed Patrol Division were dispatched to an address on Portland Circle in reference a possible gunshot wound to a male subject (later identified as Matthew Nixon – 28 year old male).
Upon the arrival of Patrol Officers at 11:45, Officers located Mr. Nixon at the residence. Mr. Nixon sustained traumatic injuries to his hands, as well as his lower extremities. Patient care was immediately turned over to Redmond EMS. Mr. Nixon was later airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital, and remains in critical condition.
Upon completing the initial investigation of the scene, it was determined that the injuries to Mr. Nixon was not caused by a firearm. Patrol Officers determined that the traumatic injury occurred on Formby Trail, which is approximately a quarter of a mile down the road.
Patrol Officers relocated to this residence, and located a live, homemade explosive device. The scene was immediately secured, and the Bomb Squad of Floyd County was contacted for mutual aid assistance. The Criminal Investigations Division was also contacted, and responded to the scene.
The Bomb Squad arrived shortly after, and the device was disposed of. Two detonated homemade explosive devices were located, as well as one live homemade explosive device.
A search warrant was executed by the Criminal Investigations Division on the incident location. This is still an ongoing investigation, and anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Polk County Police Department.

The Polk County Police Department and other agencies remain on the scene after an individual that is an alleged suspect at this time was injured by an explosive device in the Aragon area on Formby Trail, according to Polk County Assistant Police Chief Kiki Evans.
Evans said the individual lost a finger in the incident and has been taken for treatment of their injuries.
Police remain on the scene and are investigating.
Officials on the scene said that a search is underway by the Floyd Count Bomb Squad for any further devices after finding a suspected device outside the building on the scene after taking the individual for further medical treatment.
The man injured was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital by helicopter.

On September 18, 2020, the Polk County Police Department was dispatched to the area of Formby Trail in reference to an original report of a gunshot wound to a male subject. Upon the arrival of the Polk County Police Department / Polk County Sheriff’s Office, it was discovered that the wounds on the male subject appeared to be from an explosive device. The male was airlifted to a trauma facility.
Shortly thereafter, Officers / Deputies relocated to a residence on Formby Trail. Additional explosive ordinance was located at this address. The Criminal Investigations Division is currently on scene, along with the Floyd County Bomb Squad, Polk County Drug Task Force, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
