Atkins gets approval for alcohol license, Kinney annexation also OK

The second of Rockmart’s new liquor stores after voters approved of package sales in the city limits got approval for its location during the Rockmart City Council’s December meeting without any public opposition, and with a unanimous vote.

Grant Atkins will soon be able to get to work on the new liquor store location near the intersection of Highway 101 and Highway 278 in Rockmart after the council voted to approve his conditional use request.

The city held a public hearing for the request during the meeting, but no one spoke for or against the conditional use request for Carquest Auto Parts Co., located at 104 GTM Parkway, Rockmart. The plans as reported previously are for Atkins to expand the facility with the expectation that the car parts store will also remain open.

Atkins and Clint Brock were the two local business owners who won a lottery earlier in the year to request the two licenses that are available, based on the city’s population and size. As the city’s population reaches milestones (say, 10,000 people) new licenses become available.

With the conditional use request, Atkins can now move onto obtaining permits to begin work, and eventually the licenses needed to open.

During this month’s council meeting, the city also heard a request from Scott Kinney to annex into the City of Rockmart. City Council members had no issue with the annexation plan, and it was approved unanimously.

City officials did note ahead of the vote that if the Kinney’s want sewer access to the property, it will require a line to be run from existing access points onward which can be a costly measure to undertake.

Among the other items noted during the December 13 meeting was the first of three appointments to the city’s Board of Ethics. Sandy McClure was read the Oath of Office by City Attorney Mike McRae.

Dee Evans and Durand Dean weren’t on hand to take their oaths on Tuesday night, but are the two other appointees to the board.
