With great sadness, we announce that Leroy Atcheson, affectionately known as Papa, passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on April 25, 2025, with family by his side. He leaves a strong legacy of love and devotion to God and his family.
Leroy was born on March 21, 1934, to S.R. and Gladys Atcheson in Dallas, Georgia where he remained a lifelong resident. He was a charter member of Northside Baptist Church. Leroy was deeply devoted to God and his church where he cherished his roles as Chairman of Deacons, Music Director, Sunday School teacher, and many other activities. He greatly loved his church family and faithfully served for over 70 years.
Leroy began a long career at Lockheed Martin at the age of 17. After many years building models, he ended his career as a supervisor in the highly secretive Experimental Department. After retiring, Leroy especially loved fishing, going to the mountains, collecting guns, knives and watches, and was known for his colorful Sunday best. He had a flair for woodworking and would spend hours in his shop creating various pieces. He loved the outdoors and tending to his yard.
Even with all the things Leroy loved to do, nothing compared to his long for his dear wife of over 71 years, Mary Alice. After meeting as teenagers and even sneaking over to a girls’ sleepover to see Mary Alice, the two married and had four children. Over the course of their marriage, they were rarely apart. As their love grew, so did their family.
Leroy has several survivors, all of which he dearly loved. First, and foremost, his eternal love, Mary Alice Holland Atcheson. He is also survived by his children Denise (Buddy) Bentley, Tim (Cindy) Atcheson, Craig (Amy) Atcheson, and Travis (Violet) Atcheson. He excelled at his role as Papa to his grandchildren Melissa (Jon) Lindsey, Melanie McCrary, Alec (Breanna) Atcheson, Emma (Daniel) Arnold, Claire (Luis) Torres, Mollie (Cam) Nails, and Seth Atcheson, as well as to his great-grandchildren Caroline, Jenna, and Jake Lindsey, Caden and Anna-Kate McCrary, Deen Atcheson, Judah Nails, and Asher Torres. He loved and was loved by several nieces and nephews. At 91, Leroy was the oldest living member of his immediate family but was preceded in death by his grandson, Timothy Leroy Atcheson, Jr.
Please join us in celebrating the life of this one-of-a-kind man. Visitation will be held Sunday, April 27, 2025, from 2-4 pm Northside Baptist Church in Dallas, Georgia with the service immediately following. Leroy’s final resting place will be at Dallas Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Northside Baptist Church. We rest easily knowing he is at peace.
