Good Morning Polk! Tuesday, September 29, 2020

Starting off with a rainy day – especially when the temperature dropped as much as it did – has my sinuses in full revolt against what the weather has thrown at me today. It’s like trying to breathe through the tiniest of holes when you’ve been buried underground, and it is driving me crazy of late.

At first I thought it was the goldenrod blooming everywhere this time of year, but now I think it is the combined forces of fall in the south that are dragging me down.

Such is life in Georgia when the weather might turn on you in just a few minutes time. I’ve sat here long enough staring out the window to watch stop raining, then begin again as more of the cold front we’re experiencing right now moves through the area. Maybe there is something to the adage “It’s Georgia. Wait 15 minutes and the weather will change on you.”

The news might be slower than normal today due to my lack of being able to breathe normally. Apologies for those who expect speedy postings.

Meanwhile…

There are only a few days left to take advantage of the fall sports advertising package for parents and businesses, with rates starting at $59 for the rest of the season for parents/relatives to honor their favorite player, and business packages start at $189.

Those ads run online through Dec. 18, and will be collected on season-ending wrap-up pages at year’s end. E-mail kevin@polk.today to learn more about how to participate. This deal expires on October 2 at the close of business, so don’t delay! (You can pay via Paypal too!)

In the News

First up, something from the Future Farmers of America involving a longtime friend and former “employee,” Lorene Parker.

Lorene was recently featured by the state on their Facebook page. She’s at the University of Georgia for her first semester this fall. Congrats Lorene for being recognized!

Secondly, today is a somber anniversary. Sept. 29, 2017 was a horrible day for everyone, and one that still brings chills just thinking and typing about it. I didn’t know Det. Hearne as well as others, but what little time I did get to spend talking with her, she was always nice and for the most part happy. Keep her family in your thoughts and prayers today as we remember the loss of a wonderful mother, wife, daughter, sister and law enforcement officer extraordinaire.

Finally, this one comes from the Facebook of Aimee Madden, who prior to her work with the city held a job I once had as editor of the paper. We news junkies will get why this smell is one that can also raise your hair and bring chills:

As a brief aside, what does “Democracy” smell like? I know the smell of “late deadlines” and “stressed editors.” That’s the smell of tobacco smoke, tears and cold sweat.

I want one that smells like ink and grease from the press. That smells like freedom.

Today’s forecast

Ugh, rain. Despite the fact that is has been on and off here out on Prior Station this morning, there’s a 40% chance of rain across the area, with a high of 67 per the National Weather Service. Skies clear out this afternoon and evening, with a low of 47 overnight. With the cold front moving through, reasonable fall temps in the 70s return for the rest of the week, and lows overnight down into the 40’s.

Not quite heater weather yet, but you might want to wrap up in a good blanket at night when going to bed.

Something to watch this morning

The first round of presidential debates begin tonight between President Trump and former Vice President Biden. Here’s some coverage from ABC News:

I’ll be back with stories to read tomorrow when something more interesting happens than debates this evening.
