Good Morning Polk! Tuesday, August 11, 2020

For those who haven’t read yet, the polls opened this morning about an hour or so ago for the GOP Primary Run-Off for a pair of races. Voters are being asked to return and decide between candidates in the District 31 State Senate race between Jason Anavitarte and Boyd Austin, and in the 14th District Congressional race between Dr. John Cowan and Marjorie Greene.

I’m not going to sit here and tell you who you should vote for, because that is not my decision. I can tell you that you should go vote at one of seven precincts in Polk County if you cast a ballot previously in June in the Republican Primary. Don’t get me wrong, I have my favorites. But I don’t want to be that guy who tells you that you should choose one candidate or another in a primary.

I used to not believe that I should vote at all as a journalist, be completely disconnected from the process of selecting someone that I then must potentially criticize in my role as a reporter and editor of news. I voted in 2008 only to say I participated in an historic election, and I don’t think I went to the polls in 2012. But the last few years, as I have grown more fond of Polk County, I recognize being involved in the election was probably one of my greater duties as someone who writes for public consumption.

How am I supposed to know how the voting machines work if I don’t? Or tell people to vote if I don’t participate myself?

So take it from someone who used to hate the idea of waiting in line to cast a ballot: go vote. It matters. Literally could come down to your decision depending on how many people take part in the primary run-off today.

For those who aren’t sure where their polling place is, go to the Georgia Secretary of State’s website to find more information.

See the link in the first paragraph to find a list of polling place locations.

You have until 7 p.m. to get to the polls. 10+ hours and counting.

Today’s forecast

If you didn’t wake up to rain, then you’re a lucky one. Out here where I live, the morning started with a rain shower, which aren’t expected to hang around. The National Weather Service calls for just a 40% chance of rain on the day (OK…) with mostly sunny skies and a high of 94, and heat index up to 100. Overnight conditions call for chances of showers and thunderstorms before 2 a.m., and a low around 71.

Chances of rain remain in the midweek forecast as well, per the National Weather Service forecast.

Something to watch this morning

I’m unsure if I have posted a video on this before, but Marques Brownlee is one of the coolest guys doing tech videos on Youtube. (I watch a lot of tech videos…) It still reminds me of an episode of Black Mirror seeing SPOT walk around…

Something to read this morning

Maybe college football isn’t dead yet? It still has a pulse… (I’ll be keeping an eye on this for the week.)

This probably is a bad idea playing out before the world: Russia approved a vaccine before completing their clinical trials, per the NY Times.

CNBC is reporting a promise from tech companies and banks that they will hire more minorities in their workforce. I’ll take a wait-and-see approach to that news.

Fox News keeping up with Seattle amid the protests reported that their Chief of Police resigned after deep budget cuts.

From Saporta Report: Should one city (Columbus) get to change state rules on wastewater discharge just because their capacity is running out? Ummmm… What did they spend money on instead of upgrading their system?
