Good Morning Polk! Sunday, July 19, 2020

Today marks the first month of live posting here at Polk.Today, and I’m happy to report that so far, things are going well. Daily, there’s more content being added to the site, more people are visiting, and more people are sharing on social media. I truly appreciate all the positive feedback I’ve received so far, and hope that everyone continues to participate in the site.

I’m not ready to release numbers just yet, but I’ll say this: much better than I had anticipated, even with Google ads on the page.

More great things are to come! So stay tuned, additional announcements are on the way.

ICYMI

Polk County has, in some weird bizarre universe that we currently live in, recorded its second death from COVID-19 a second time. Yes. You read that correctly. Two deaths have been reported twice. More information to come as soon as possible. Weekends make it harder to get in touch with people…

Today’s forecast

Did I mention yesterday it was hot? Guess what?

More of the same today according to the National Weather Service forecast, with a high of 94 – though the meteorologists report that it’ll feel like 101. Low down to 71 overnight. There’s a chance today and this evening of stormy weather, but it isn’t much at 30%. So like every day recently: hydrate. Regularly apply sunscreen. Stay in front of the air conditioning to avoid melting as much as possible.

Something to watch this morning

I’m a Tom Hanks fan. Hope you are too.

Something to read this morning

Because the past remains present in our lives, constantly: Colin Powell wants answers about the faulty intelligence that got us into the War in Iraq.

The Atlantic talks about the impact of the life of Rep. John Lewis had on Civil Rights, making America what it is today.

The Wall Street Journal looks at what might happen if Americans don’t get the $600 a week they’ve had in jobless benefits needed during pandemic shutdowns. Likely outcome? Bad. Very, very, very bad.

A second Civil Rights leader, C.T. Vivian, also died this weekend.
