CHANGELOG – Myrick Multimedia 2.0.9.1

This point update for software on Myrick Multimedia sites is mainly maintenance and bug fix related, so those who care more about new things being added to the site, y’all can skip this one.

Anyone interested in the background stuff? You can stick around. Here’s a rundown of what’s been up since the last point release back in Fall 2025:

Bug fixes

Subsite logins: a error in subsite logins used by Paid Memberships Pro across the network was fixed after an error was found in the plugin framework.

Comments on sites: Thanks to a friend and subscriber Perry Barrett, I caught a very bad, bad bug that I should have known about before: comments were broken for users. His help with troubleshooting on my end provided answers, and now permissions should be fixed so that comments can be left on stories across the network for active subscribers. The investigation into this issue also found I had some overlapping software preventing comments from being posted as well, and the problem piece of code was removed. So all ACTIVE users have their comment permissions returned like they should be.

Server-side issues: fixed – configuration problems with Apache2 (redirect issues); DNS (Bind9) links in the server; NGINX configurations; Redis (caching) configuration issues; SSL certificate updates; Fail2Ban configuration issues; Bot blocking; MySQL configuration issues; Server emergency contact setup. Tuning for various programs that run the site also increased speed and decreased overall server usage.

Site issues: XML-RPC was shut down; Memory limits raised with new server; Meta crawler block put in place for sites; PM Pro category restrictions were repaired and should be correct for users now.

Image enlargement: A visitor to the site left a message about her inability to see enlarged versions of Polk Today’s arrest reports on April 10, and this one turned out to be an easy fix – adding a lightbox script that allows for images to be clicked and zoomed in, along with going full screen on the device you are using, and an X to close.

Shut down (for now)

Amid last week’s unexpected outages (including on – and I’m not kidding – April Fool’s Day) Facebook was pinging the crap out of the network, and the culprit turned out to be the GeoDirectory plugin. Something broke in the way the location-related services were being handled in the update that plugin authors put out, which, well… sucked for the way the site was processing things involving events and classifieds. The location code change then caused a cascade of issues all at the same time, which resulted in Facebook bots getting stuck in a loop hitting the site and ending with several episodes of the hosting company throttling my server instance, and required upgrading available processing power and storage as a result of trying to get things up and running.

The good news? The sites shouldn’t have any trouble handling traffic anymore with the upgrade. The bad? GeoDirectory is all kinds of broken for Myrick Multimedia use currently and in the future.

Honestly? I’m not exactly sad about that particular outcome. GeoDirectory was built for a specific use, and the way that I was trying to shoehorn it into the network was probably not the best implementation in the long run. Especially since it limited various things I wanted to do across the network with Events, Classifieds and in the coming future: Real Estate, Jobs, Car Sales, etc.

So like last Spring when I spent an inordinate amount of time on fixing problems, it looks like I’ll be back at it. However, I’ll be doing so with a lot more experience under my belt – and ideas of how I might just code my own custom setup for the various services I’d like for the site to include heading into the remainder of 2026.

Stay tuned, I’ll be announcing plans for the replacement ASAP. I’m already in the planning stages for the replacement.

Chatwoot also required removal since it was having trouble staying online with the way things were setup in 2025. The goal was to provide instant links for customer support, advertising sales information and newsroom tips. Sadly, it seemed that what I was trying to do was just a wee bit too far out of my reach in the moment.

Good news? Along with GeoDirectory, I’m going to work on a custom replacement for chat as well – hopefully something that I can then apply to some of the games I have planned for the rest of 2026 to code together as well. Also a stay tuned item.

Roadmap

I’m still going to start working on MM Games, but for now I figured that the first thing I’d focus on is replacements for the systems that went down: Classifieds, Events and Chat.

Like with Games, each of the non-news/sports-related items on the network need their own subsites, and a better user interface for adding items.

So my goal is this at the moment:

Classifieds – Along with still providing unlimited classified and events posts for subscribers to be able to add items, non-subscribers will be able to add classifieds on a tiered basis for 30-day listings. Individuals will be able to pay for these and have access to JUST their classified posts for management, paying for new listings, etc. They’ll create a Myrick Multimedia account that can be upgraded to full network access with Monthly+ plans. Also plan to rework the UI for how they are displayed across the network. `

Events – Like Classifieds, it’ll also have a redesigned UI, a system where people who aren’t subscribers can add their specific events for a fee, and overall redesign the way they are displayed across the network.
