CHANGELOG: Myrick Multimedia 2.0.8.9

This will be the final update in the 2.0.8 series, which have mainly been focused on small improvements and adding new features along the way. This round could have jumped to 2.0.9 with the amount accomplished, but eh. Stick with the program.

Round and round we go again with the fixes and such.

Design update

The Today Network Theme began an update from 1.4 to 1.5 with a lot of updates on the design and streamlining a bunch of areas where I prefer to cut down on the amount of switching between mobile and desktop devices. These only apply so far to Haralson, Paulding, and Polk Today, along with Today News Wire and Today Sports Wire. The rest of the theme updates will follow along for Kevin the Editor, the Myrick Multimedia main site, and Myrick Multimedia Advertising as a follow-up to this update, but without the point release included. (But will be noted in the 2.0.9 release notes as “completed” with the next design update, along with minor patches along the way.)

Here’s a rundown of things accomplished with the 1.5 update:

  • Set the width at a standard of 1200 pixels for normal functions, and 1920 pixels for wide functionality; centered.
  • Re-standardized the Jost and Newsreader fonts as the only available to use (with exception of the system font as a fallback in case something breaks)
  • Standardized the top menu header to ensure that “login” can be used on any site. Signup still points to Myrickmultimedia.com/signup as it should.
  • Reconstructed the Single Post Layout for regular posts, reworked the content flow.
  • Addon: Item to read after post (this seems to be a popular trend on the news site front. This is for experimental purposes for now. If you’d ever like to complain about a feature that you think doesn’t work, please let me know at info@myrickmultimedia.com.)
  • Addon: Related posts auto injection. Adds a 1×3 midway through a story for desktop, and 3-stacked story item for mobile.
  • Removed desktop sidebar/mobile below post items (included a box for classifieds, events, related posts and ads in stacks in both cases.)
  • Removed: desktop post version/mobile post version for single post templates. Replaced with a “post basic” that includes only what is needed for posts in an effort to reduce load time due to the device switching penalty.
  • Addon: Random Classified Injection – adds a classified listing on each post at 40% the way through, based on paragraph minimum and avoiding other ads being injected.
  • Addon: Random Event Injection – adds an event listing on each post at 80% the way through the post, based on paragraph minimum and avoiding other ads being injected.
  • Addon: Current Weather/Date/Social Links added to top of front
  • Addon: Author/Post Date/Categories/Social Links added to posts
  • Addon: Featured Image Captions (how is this not a standard feature of WordPress? I had to add this on site-by-site with a snippet? Wow. Just wow, WordPress developers. This should be part of the featured image block options.)

Myrick Multimedia Subscriptions Signup page – corrected a couple of errors on the page, including: a shift of where subscription pricing is available to users down to include “add info” box above, includes info about Paypal processing in hopes of not creating confusion for users jumping off the page to pay (that is still a problem I thought this would fix. Might have to try to sign up for Stripe…); added price that was left off for the seven-day pass option.

Bug fix

What’s the old saying? If everything were perfect, there would be no need for improvements. Sadly, the world ain’t poifect, but fortunately for you, I’m always thinking about improvements beyond what I’m writing.

Here’s the latest round of bug fixes:

All Ads Story Injection

Ah yes, everyone’s favorite! Ad injection for the Myrick Multimedia ad server.

This was a major one, that users on mobile devices probably noticed more than anyone: ad cutoff with the injections.

Certain sized ads on mobile devices require scaling for it to display properly, and based on the way I originally had the script designed by ChatGPT and the way I had setup the placement for the ad server, it wasn’t able to scale each ad based on when it was selected.

Instead of relying on the ad server to determine the random selection, I instead went back to the drawing board and based selection off the already existing ad groups I use for manual placements – on the front page, specific category pages, games, etc. – and used those as the basis for the scripting to determine which ad gets displayed in posts on the various Myrick Multimedia sites.

The good news? It works like a charm now, and no ads get cut off in the process of being displayed to users – finally scaled correctly!

Myrick Multimedia Events

Polk County Board of Education Work Session

The Polk County Board of Education meets for monthly work...

Want to list your event? Check out subscription options that include unlimited event listings.

There’s still some work to be done on some other placements, but that is going to require a switchover in the coming weeks to manually placed google adsense placements on the front and within posts (within reason, of course) that will provide a better user experience overall and (hopefully) stop the random placements that break the design in ugly ways.

Geodirectory Events and Classifieds snippets

This was another area that needed some bug fixes I finally got to sit down and work on with AI, and made some improvements along the way. Standardized the listing layouts for classifieds when injected without additional instructions: image to the left, title and excerpt to the right when using the shortcode. The events needed to have the upcoming date fixed across the snippet as well, and got a good amount of testing before being implemented.

As seen above with the design updates, we also improved upon how events and classifieds are found on posts by adding a code snippet for Random Classified Injection and Random Event Injection, using the Orange and Yellow colors along with this update.

Claude also fixed some bugs based on taxonomy filtering that needed worked out in order to show events and classifieds by county on their proper sites.
